Is it okay if I don’t have surgery?

The clinic was quiet that afternoon.
An elderly woman walked in slowly, supported by her son. Her right wrist was gently wrapped in a scarf. She looked a little tired, but her expression was calm and kind. Her son explained that she had fallen at home that morning. She had instinctively put out her hand to break the fall, and soon afterward her wrist became swollen and painful. Even holding a cup had become difficult.
After an examination and an X-ray, the diagnosis was clear — a wrist fracture.
The doctor reviewed the X-ray with the patient and her son, pointing to the image while explaining in simple terms.“This is a very common type of fracture after a fall. The bone is broken, but it hasn’t shifted very much.”
The doctor then talked them through the two treatment options.
One option was surgery, using a small metal plate to hold the bone in place. This can help the bone heal in a good position and allow earlier movement , but it requires anesthesia and comes with the usual risks of surgery.
The other option was conservative treatment, which involves gently realigning the bone and protecting it with a cast, allowing it to heal naturally over time. This approach takes longer time in cast and requires regular follow-up visits, but avoids surgery.
The elderly woman listened quietly, nodding as she took everything in. When the doctor finished, she asked softly,“Is it okay if I don’t have surgery?”
The doctor smiled and reassured her.“Based on the type of fracture you have and your daily needs, conservative treatment is a very reasonable choice. With proper care and regular check-ups, most people recover good everyday function.”
She turned to her son. He looked concerned, but respected her decision.“At my age, I don’t want to put my body through too much,” she said gently.
In the end, she chose conservative treatment.
The doctor carefully adjusted the wrist and applied a cast, then explained a few important tips: avoid lifting heavy objects, keep the hand raised to reduce swelling, and come back right away if there is numbness or increasing pain.
As she left the clinic, her wrist was wrapped securely in a thick cast. She looked more relaxed than when she had arrived. Supported by her son, she walked out slowly, but with confidence.
Not every injury needs the most aggressive treatment.
Sometimes, the best choice is the one that fits a person’s health, lifestyle, and comfort level.
For this patient, a safe and steady recovery mattered most.
